I agree we felt so safe despite all the poverty . We had 10k in camera gear and had no reservations walking anywhere .
The locals count on tourists to give them money to pose or play music. That money we give them is a lot when you make 25 bucks a month . The locals will hurt anyone bothering tourists and upsettng those tourist dollars
We were in Cuba for 8 days last summer - had $4000 USD on us in a cross-body bag at all times, and never once felt unsafe. We took US dollars and exchanged them for CUC either in a bank (87 cents to the dollar) or on the street (93 cents to the dollar)....with the exchange rate to Euros, the hassle of going to the bank for the exchange and to pick up, and then the exchange back to USD afterwards, it was just as good of a deal to take USD and exchange there. It was very easy and quick. There are also money exchange storefronts around the city. You will not spend nearly as much money as you think - everything is relatively cheap, unless you feel the need to eat a very fancy (touristy, usually) meal every time you turn around. I think we spent more money on bottled water and mojitos than we did on food!
Souvenirs tend to be art, cigars, coffee, rum and straw bags, and wooden carvings.
13% for converting dollars to cuc is a big difference from 6% for both a conversion to euros and a conversion to cuc.we have a chase bank on our corner so getting euro's was fast and simple

And then the conversion rate back is what? You've got to consider the conversion going both ways, as opposed to simply going from USD to CUC as needed while in Cuba.
it was 3% back . so dollar to cuc is 13% and cuc back to dollar another 3% that is 15% .
we spent 3% dollar to euro . 3% euro to cuc --3% cuc back to dollar .= 9%
