This is one of the things we have thought about for the past year. Buying a Westie & maybe a teardrop trailer to tow behind it for extra storage. My dad had one when I was a kid & we loved it he drove that thing everywhere.

How did it work out for you?

Pros & cons.

Oh yes, do this!!! the war / battle / travel stories you gain will be worth a lifetime of memories for your grandkids!

Loved our 73 westy (Tho it was a ASI conversion,)

Teardrop would be pushing it for a aircooled!!!

Love my Rialta (for when you get old and want a microwave / furnace / toilet and shower) Gets better mileage anyway! and MUCH more dependable, but not as 'cool' in winter and HOT in summer. (Our kids were given squirt guns to ward off heat exhaustion in the back seat of westy.) Works for fire extinguisher when the engine catches on fire (which it WILL).

LUV the outdoor shower I added (best feature to beat the heat, and wash off the sweat and grease (from fixing on the road!))

here you go! Enjoy the journey!

We know that the Westies are WAY underpowered but people are putting Subaru engines in them & they work very well.

yes, the subie (twin turbo) is a nice swap, I also do TDI swaps, as does Karl

the std 1.7l VW WC I-4 is ez and nice swap too. (for Vanagon) Use the diesel mounts and jam it in. (Better than a TDI IMHO.) Less 'tranny ratio' issues.
