Trying to price a trip from LAX to Athens 05/21 - 06/1 and cheapest i'm getting is $1550, holy smokes! Thats for the nonstop 10 hr flight. For the same date I can fly LAX to Bangkok which is a much longer flight for only $883 now. It's ridiculous how insanely expensive flights to Europe have become and this is with the Euro losing 30% of it's value.
For those who are trying to make the argument about high season etc. right now it's high season in Bangkok so I priced a ticket next week via Cathay Pacific for $1079. I fail to understand why flights to Europe have become so astronomically expensive... I checked my history and see I flew to London in May 2008 for $850 roundtrip.
I paid $1200 per ticket in TAXES ALONE EWR > LHR return.
What airline even flies that route non-stop? (And even if someone does, 10 hours seems a bit short--I think it's more like 11-12.) With a single stop I'm seeing r/t as low as $879 on AF/KLM through CDG outbound and AMS on the return.
Nonstop is what's killing the price. I can also find sub-$900 on a couple of routings on Matrix that are one connection routes and not insane (ie. 15-16 hours of travel time and reasonable connections).

LAX - Gatwick nonstop May2015 midweek departure/return is $911; $980 if you fly into Heathrow. That's not so bad compared to your 7-yo price, is it? If possible, adjust your travel dates to see whether you can save some money.
I'm not seeing a direct flight from LAX-Athens from the usual carriers ... perhaps that's why they're so expensive?

perhaps. I see Easyjet has flights from Gatwick to Athens but then again doing a multi carrier connection can be risky...I've done it in the past with a couple hrs buffer but have just been lucky.
Found one for $865 roundtrip IF I leave Wednesday and return on Monday...I guess the weekend departures are much more expensive.

Honestly I have no clue where you got that $1550 quote from, I assume you meant 10 hour nonstop from LAX to ??? then another flight ??? to ATH as there's no direct flight from LAX to ATH. With the +/- 3 days option on Kayak I see only one combination above $911, Friday departures and weekend return flights are a bit more expensive than midweek but still under $900.
Try checking the matrix (Matrix - ITA Software by Google). I'm seeing multiple options for less than $900 with one stop, and many more that are more than $1000, but still well below $1500.
