How are those taking sabatic allowed those options? I thought it was difficult to get time off in USA. Even taking 3 weeks of my paid vacation that i deserve to take all together seem like a big struggle. I extended my 3 week vacation + 2 weeks unpaid time off for a trip aboard. I had to jump soo many hoops to get that 2 week unpaid time off. It was a headache

On the other hand, my husband took emergency FMLA for 2 months and it was great for him. HE really didn't care if he had the job or not when he came back, so he went to work & told them he had to see his parents as they are super sick & he is taking FMLA for it. He got a family doctor to sign the document and he got to spend time with his parents and do "nonwork thing". It was good

Sabbaticals are pretty common in certain fields, especially academia. When university professors negotiate benefits and salaries, periodic sabbaticals are one of the perks that make up for lower salaries in the humanities and some social sciences. In theory, time spent on sabbatical is used to expand knowledge and experience in a way that will foster stronger, more creative academic work after the break. For someone in the arts, this might mean traveling to see classics or emerging art of all types. For a social scientist, it may be as simple as taking time to observe the world through a slightly different perspective, which can happen through travel, reading, etc...

Something I definitely wish I could do from time to time.
But, I guess I'm loyal to steering these wheels to a fault.

Then at the same time, there's a lot of turnover in trucking, so if someone mentions "sabbatical" to their terminal manager, the manager will just think "we got another quitter", and do them dirty any ways.
