it still shows you are influenced by others in what to "own". Why does anyone need any jewelry, including wedding rings? There is absolutely no point in spending in $$$$ in buying some metal and wear it.
I wear it because I LIKE it. My only truly expensive jewelry is a strand of black pearls. My engagement ring isn't a traditional diamond. It was a ring that I fell in love with because it's beautiful, so my husband bought it for me and surprised me with it.
if you think that's me, you are mistaken. I live in a 600sf 17 year old condo with no concierge/swimming pool. I don't own a car, and I don't even own a watch, not to say "jewelleries". I am wearing a $25 Tommy Hilfiger jacket and a $40 pair of jeans bought from an outlet today. My computer is a nondescript Dell bought in May 2008.
I was referring the majority of the population. Why do you think Americans are in such high level of debt? I neven paid a cent of interest to any credit card company in my life.
Many of us have no debt. The fact that you found the need to mention the brand of jacket or the amount you paid for it says a lot.
Some of us are able to have the things we have, yet remain debt free, have money for travel, and have savings.

Even in your efforts to sound unpretentious, you come off as incredibly pretentious.
I wouldn't really consider myself to have visited a place if I spent the whole time in a gated compound. I would much rather see and experience the history and culture of a place.
But for a vacation that is pure relaxation, a gated compound resort could be fine. It's just not the type of vacation I favor.
I don't think people stop to think of the inherent dangers of being in either a gated resort or any gated community.
I'm thinking!!! Way back at the American Embassy in Peru, one time, with only one gated entry, and high protective walls, the Shining Path blocked that one entry with a big truck one nite, and? No one could get out!!! Trapped! Yup! Secure as a prison!
someone who lives in Europe would be pretty dumb to spend $3000 on a Florida trip, no matter what he does in Florida. There is probably close to nothing he can find in Florida he can't enjoy in Europe at a much lower cost.
The everglades are MUCH less expensive in Europe. Diving in the Keys, too. You assume too much. I have European friends who travel here, at a great expense, for experiences they cannot get in Europe.
This weekend I am going to my friend's place to have dinner about 30 miles away in a difference city. By your loose definition, I will be a traveller since I will travel to get there?
What I am getting out of this thread is that everyone has a different definition of "travel." Only 30 miles is commuting distance for many. But if it is someplace you rarely go, I suppose it counts as travel. Personally, when I travel I try to watch local TV, read local papers (if available) and ride public transit if possible.
