Me and the wife are planning a trip this coming September to either Bermuda or the Bahamas and we are having trouble deciding.
I would prefer a quieter, more laid back place with more of an emphasis on nature type stuff and historical attractions to explore. While my wife would appreciate something a little more "lively" like nightlife, shops, etc.

Why not do both, like we did. We had a 9 day cruise on RRCL which sailed out of New York to Bermuda, St Thomas, St. Marteen, San Juan and Haiti. Of all the islands we've visited, everyone agreed that Bermuda is the most beautiful and absolutely breathtaking beaches. However, most people in our group thought that it lacked carribbean culture and excitement.

I've not been to the Bahamas, though I have been to several Caribbean islands. I have been to Bermuda twice. Keeping in mind that this was 20 years ago and things may have changed, but Bermuda was very formal when I was there. It was not party central, very British. Shops were good. We replaced some good Wedgewood china we had lost when my grandmother passed, at a much better price than if we had done it in the US. Made the trip worthwhile for us. It's a beautiful island, but wouldn't call it lively.

You would prefer Bermuda; she would prefer the Bahamas. I have a feeling you'll end up in the Bahamas!

Lol. You are probably right.
If there are some historical attractions around Nassau in the Bahamas, and maybe some nature type stuff like hiking or a national park nearby, i would be happy. Is there stuff like that in the Bahamas??

Yes. The Bahamas have some historical sights, a lot of early colonial history over there. I would maybe suggest a few nights on an "out island" and a few on Nassau/Paradise Island. The out islands are quite, and the bigger ones have lots of nature, some histroical sites and awesome beaches. Paradise Island as the famous Atlantis resort which I enjoy a lot too. Shopping, nice beaches, awesome pools and slides, great casino, nightclubs etc.. Maybe a trip to an out island and finishing off the trip in Atlantis is what you might want to do?

Perfectly said. We've been to both. My husband hated Bermuda, as he found it too formal. I would go back in a heartbeat, because it is beautiful. We compromise by going to the Caribbean.
If you get LWN and have a DVR, Laura McKenzie's Traveler show will be featuring the Bahamas tomorrow (1/27) at 5 a.m.
I have been to both islands. Bermuda is clean, easy to get around, great beaches, but expensive. I liked Nassau but we were just at Paradise Island for the day and the beach was great. Didn't do any real sightseeing except to go to the Straw Market.
For us it is a no brainer, but that is just an opinion. One of my least favorite island happens to be the Bahamas. Yes, Bermuda is expensive but actually so are the Bahamas and the Bahamas are not nearly as tourist friendly as Bermuda. Other than nice beaches and gambling I don't see the Bahamas has anything to offer. Bermuda is clean, good golfing, great beaches and they welcome tourists. To be honest, why not try another island. There are so many wonderful choices in the Caribbean. Try St Maarten, St Thomas, Barbados, Curacao, or even some on the west side, closer to central America?

You do realize that the Bahamas is a LOT more than just Nassau and PI, right? Go 100 miles from NAS and its a whole nuther world-----a much better and more prestine one! Eleuthera and the Exuma chain just to name a few!
