A friend wants to take his boat next summer up the Hudson and then the Erie Canal/Mohawk River into the Great Lakes and then spend the next two seasons sailing there. He invited me to come along for at least a portion of the Canal journey.
Has anyone done this? The good, the bad? Any suggestions?
I haven't done the Erie Canal, but I have boated canals. It is a wonderful leisurely way to travel.
I happen to love dams, locks, boats, and scenery, though. So, whether or not you would enjoy it would depend upon your idea of enjoyable vacations.
I'd look into how crowded and how large the other boats are going to be. I don't think I would enjoy sharing a lock with a huge cargo ship if I were in a tiny canal cruiser. All that information should be available on-line with a little research.
Best luck to your friend and to you, if you decide to go.
Depending on size of boat, a season pass can range from $25 to $100, with ten-day passes at half that.
