From where?

Short answer, kinda.

Amtrak from the west and south goes to Boston South Station. Then you've got to take the Red line to either Downtown Crossing or Park Station - or walk to either through Chinatown, it's only ~5 blocks. At Downtown Xing, get on the Yellow Line. At Park Station, get on one of the Green Lines going to Leichmere. DO NOT GET ON A TRAIN GOING TO GOVERNMENT CENTER!
Get off either train at North Station. Walk up the stairs from the MBTA station to the Amtrak station.
Take the Rockport or Newburyport purple/commuter line to Salem.

Or, instead of taking a subway/light rail, you could just walk the 1.1 miles from South Station to North Station. Boston is a very walkable city (even though Market @ Merrimack isn't a nice intersection to walk through).

If your coming from Maine, the Downeaster comes into North Station, so you don't need to cross downtown Boston to get to the commuter line. But, the Downeaster is the ONLY Amtrak that goes into North Station.

Also, North Station is basically under the TD Garden, so you could take a tour of that if your a Basketball/Hockey fan.

You said you were looking "for more helpful info." Scorpio's answer is as helpful as you will get. In fact, I live in a town next to Salem, and Scorpio gave an excellent answer.

You didn't reply to the question about where you were starting from. If you are taking Amtrak into South Station or from any point south, you would walk 1 mile along the Rose Kennedy Greenway to North Station; or take a taxi or an Uber to North Station (no more than @ $7, as it's only a mile); or take the Red Line from South Station to Park Street, then from Park Street take the Green Line to North Station.

Once at North Station, take the Newburyport/Rockport commuter rail. This will pass through North Station; then Chelseas; the Riverworks (daytime and rush hour for GE workers only); Lynn; Swampscott, then Salem. It will cost about $7 or so roundtrip. Tickets purchased online (you can use your smart-phone for this) or at North or South stations will be less expensive than purchasing with cash onboard.

It's about a 25 minute ride each way.

Note, these commuter rail trains run infrequently after rush hour, if you plan on doing any sightseeing after, say, 7pm.

Cranky, the thread was from 2013. Perhaps that's why the OP didn't reply. . .
