Glenwood Springs Colorado is always on my list when I'm near. Steamboat and Flaming Gorge will get you back up towards WY. Jog over to NE UT (Bearlake, catch Soda Springs for another mineral bath, then over to the Star Valley in WY (AFton and north to Hoback, Jct. OF COURSE be sure to take the Beartooth Hwy. I will indeed bring a couple of cases of bottled water with me, and i am happy to hear that i will at least be able to hike around in the morning or evening, the places you guys pointed out sound really awesome. i'm excited!
I know there is a campsite in the middle of Death valley. has anyone of you been there?

thanks for summing up these wonderful places stealthrabbit, but i'm not sure if we have time enough to head up to northern UT and even WY

Yup, the 'campground' (with shade) is always full. Across the street is OVERFLOW, Think ~ 1/4 mile square Gravel Parking lot. There are also a few sites in 'loops' there. I went hiking 5AM till 10 AM, then bought an afternoon / evening pool pass (~$5.00) and then went hiking again after 7pm. BUT that was March and it was HOT.

The Grand Canyon is beyond HUGE and driving there is FOREVER (I drive there at night and arrive for sunrise, as there is NOTHING (no much) worth looking at enroute.) I actually recommend taking a flight to GCNP, as it is WORTH it to get a better perspective and SAVE time / fuel driving. Probably least expensive excursion is from LV (Could take a flight in and train / bus out... BUT, I would take a tour flight from LV, and probably not even get dropped at South Rim airport. UT Parks are far more accessible / drivable.

DO schedule a sunset sunrise in Valley of FIRE (1 hr north of LV) GREAT camping (but few sites). 3.5 weeks you can see A LOT of the western states, Definitely try to fit in Yellowstone / Tetons. You can EASILY drive there overnight from SLC or even Moab. I drive most at night, as Like the sites via moonlight, and much of it is VERY desolate. Car / tires run cooler and more economical at night. I take a couple naps during the day.

Thanks StealthRabbit for your clear suggestions!

I know flying to some places would come in handy at times, but i think my parents want an easy and worryfree roadtrip where we just can adjust the schedule everyday.. but thanks for the suggestion!

Valley of fire Sounds really awesome, i will make sure we schedule that! as for driving overnight, to me does indeed seem like a good solution to me, as my parents already need more sleep, so they can do a nap during the day when i do it! , although this roadtrip has to bring me relaxation too though
