Loved St. Peters but hated the Vatican because of the crowds.

But Rome is great. Try and get a hotel a little bit out of the touristy areas and experience a bit of the real Rome.
If you get to the museum when it opens and run to the Sistine Chapel, the rest of the museum and the rest of the day is your to enjoy.
If you go on a day when the Sistine is closed, there are few crowds.

Well, I did it...I booked my flight to Rome tonight!

I'm sure I'll be back on this board to ask questions as the trip gets nearer. I'm nervous but excited at the same time.

Excellent!
What dates? Over Thanksgiving?
Now, go to the library and get an Eyewitness (DK Publisher) Italy or Rome specific book.

I'm actually going there before Thanksgiving: November 10-20. While I don't mind cold weather, I thought I'd have a slightly better chance at good weather if I left a little earlier in the month. Also, if I get back to work for Thanksgiving week, it will give me a time to catch up on work when things are a bit slower.
