Somebody recommended priceline.com to make reservations for cheaper price and I checked. Is this site real? Why does it costs less than the actual price from the hotel site? What is the cancellation policy for priceline? How will the hotel know if I paid already from another site?

I have never used it but yes it is a real site. I have lots of friends who have used it. I am sure they have the cancellation policy in their terms and conditions... but if its very cheap I am guessing non refundable.....

Priceline has NO cancellation policy. You win the bid, it's charged immediately to your card, and there are NO refunds for any reason, unless the hotel burns down.

Have you never seen their tv commercials with William Shatner? Priceline has been around about as long as the internet.

priceline is much cheaper. i live in hotels and dont know what id do w/o priceline. currently staying in a marriott fairfield inn for $43, if i went thru them directly they'd want $99. last week was staying in an embassy suites for $45, walkin rate was $149. and so on. pricelines name your own price is the real deal. much cheaper than hotwire. you pay the same price you would at a crack motel but you get a nice 2.5/3* hotel instead. can't complain

just be sure to do yor research before you bid. betterbidding and bidfortravel are good forums for checking out winning bids. if yor dates arent set in stone you can get nearly infinite number of rebids so you can get lowest possible price. when you're researching, the biggest thing to check for is that none of the hotels in your bid zones have hidden fees (parking, internet, room upgrade fees, resort fees, etc).

priceline is also good for car rentals. i dont use it much cuz i get better rates w/ going direct cuz i rent monthly or weekly, but for shorter term its what i use, always get 50% off regular rate.
