It is my understanding that it is illegal to have domestic cruise ships trips since the boats are registered in International Countries etc.. There are a few ships that are registered in the US that do trips around the Hawaiin islands so you could possibly find one of those if they ever go to California for some season and cross back to Hawaii.

Oh ... Is that why every single cruise outta LA/San Pedro goes to Mexico??? If I wanna take a cruise, I'd have to fly somewhere just to avoid Mexico as I have no desire to go there with the current unrest.

We considered that, but we are both afraid of boats, and we are staying on Oahu for a month, in an apt/hotel. Will a ship let you off and you catch it back a month later? Don't know. Also, taking the two-day train-trip to Cali is a mini-vaca in itself. We will be back to road trips for a while after I guess. We may take a cruise when daughter graduates in '14. This vaca however, will be mine & hubby's first, (probably only one) by OURSELVES!! Thanks for the suggestion!

That is exactly why. Registering the boat in an international country allows the boats to have very relaxed labor laws etc.. So they must stop at an international port of call before they can come back to the US.
