Sight is only one sense.
That site can whet my appetite to try more.

I can look at the Acropolis in a video, but to be there... that was something.

Now I'm not going to bother to get married. I can just look at pictures of wives on line.

I don't think thats the point of the website... whenever I'm going to go somewhere I always like to see videos of it before I go and look at people driving the streets. Just because its better to go there doesn't mean it can't be interesting to see in a video.

Agreed. I think it is pretty neat.

OK, i looked at Astana. Lots of sweeping shots of modern buildings, a high-end shopping mall or two, a few historic sites or museum artifacts, some buildings under construction, interiors of business offices, rich people arriving at the airport or dining in style, some beautiful women in expensive fashions. Absolutely nothing that would give me any idea what it would be like to live there. Not a single shot of a house that a Kazakh lives in, nor a neighborhood, nor a street; no Kazakh music in the background, nor the sound of the language. Are there any cars in Astana? What's the traffic like? How do people dress when not posing for glamor shots? What's it like in winter? I still don't know.

So, just to be fair, I looked at Buffalo. It was a 3-minute documentary about kids making a documentary about their city, and they could have been in Omaha just saying they were in Buffalo.

So then I went to Bergen. If Hitler had sent Leni Riefenstahl into occupied Bergen, she would have come back with the exact same video. It showed me nothing about life of Norwegians in Bergen. But lots of long shots of ships in the harbor, since Bergen has a harbor and Astana doesn't. Apparently the only difference. That, and the fact that all the Bergen shots were taken on the same rainy day.

My mother was from Vilnius, so I thought I'd look at that. It looked like an old 8-mm vacation film of a tourist who never got beyond the city center.

Burgler, I didn't see any "people driving the streets" in any of them. As for preparing myself for a trip, the Astana video made me think that would be the absolutely last place on earth I'd ever want to have to spend a day.

Whoa! Chicoutimi! A little town in Quebec, merged with Jonquiere and now known as Saguenay. YouTube quality video shot out the window of a bus passing through Chicoutimi, following the only car in the city, with an English song playing over it.

Sarajevo, shot entirely from the air, and looking exactly like every other city in the world from the air. Nice Bosnian song, though. Now I'm beginning to understand. This site is just an index of YouTube videos.

I've been to a lot of places and missed many of the attractions, maybe a video tour would let me see them. Of course if it's just a bunch of sponsored sites I may as well skip it. I personally would like to see some of the underside the local boosters would prefer you skip!

This is neat, but until they develop smell-o-vision, it just won't be the same...
