What would be the airport to fly into to tour around the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We would be coming from Maine and renting a car while there.

It depends on your priorities.

If you are willing to drive a lot, your cheapest flights will be out of Detroit-Metro (DTW) or Milwaukee (MKE). You will probably also get better car rental deals in that location. Green Bay (GRB) is also an option.

Upper peninula airports include:

EscanabaESCDelta County AirportHancock / CalumetCMXHoughton County Memorial AirportMarquette / GwinnMQTSawyer International AirportSault Ste. MarieCIUChippewa County International Airport

Traverse City is also an option.

Hope that helps.

Green Bay by far the closest. However, it might be cheaper to fly to Milwaukee or Detroit, where you can go non-stop. Any other airport, you could pay $200 more per ticket to make the connection out to the boondocks. Milwaukee to Green Bay is only a 2-hour drive, only 3 hours Milwaukee to Menominee, Michigan in the UP.

When you order your Pasties, find a place that still makes them with rutabagas. Eat lunch at the Suomi Cafe in Houghton, and be sure to try the cinnamon rolls at the L'Anse Cafe. Miles and miles of free beaches all along US-2 west of St. Ignace, just park on the highway shoulder (like everyone else does) and walk over the dunes. On the north side, Lake Superior is very, very warm this year, you can actually swim in the lake, I've heard.

Where in the UP will you be? I think Grand Rapids would be a little bit faster of a drive than detroit and it wouldn't cost too much more.
