hi,
i bought this car new 3 years ago. it has 33150 miles. i just changed the oil a week ago and change it every 3k miles.
The engine light came on today....not sure why.

i'm on the east coast and we've gotten a lot of snow....i've done some drifting/sliding with the car on the ice 3 days ago as well as 2 days ago ...pushing the engine a bit i guess. could that have something to do with the check engine light?

the manual just says "take to dealer" but i wanted to check with my trusted experts first

Go to an AutoZone--they will pull the code free of charge.

yeah, there really is no way to diagnose your issue (or lack thereof) with that little of information. i second taking it to AZ or something of the like to have the codes read. Once you have that info, if it does not make sense what the code is telling you, post back and we can help you 'translate'.

Could be the oxygen sensor is blocked - it happened to my sister's 2000 Corolla due to being parked under a pollen emitting tree.

Before you do anything else, make sure the gas cap is tight. This can cause a false indication. If this is the case, it might take a few days of driving before it goes away. If you want to be able to read the the diagnostic code yourself, you can get a handheld OBD reader. They will plug into any car made after '97 and I've seen them at costco for $35.

lumbollo is correct. if your gas cap is not on with the required amount of clicks, your check engine light will come on.

My standard reply to "my check engine light is on, what's the problem".

We have no clue, you need to get the code read, go to autozone and get it read, DO NOT purchase anything they recommend, post back here with the fault code.

This is not a false indication, if this is in fact the problem, it is reporting a correct fault, lack of pressure in the fuel tank.

Actually the reason that some vehicle manufacturers check the pressure in the tank is because it is a relatively cheap way to verify the integrity of the fuel system. It isn't required for a properly functioning engine, hence I would argue it is a false indication to check the engine.
