Hi, I have a relatively inexpensive place to live but it's a 50 mile round-trip commute. I am really worrying about my Corolla. It now has 65,000 miles on it. I got it at 41,000. Trying to decide whether to go through the expense of moving for the sake of my car, or just stay where I am and maintain the car as best I can. I've already replaced the front brakes and tires. I'm afraid before I know it, I'll have 80,000 on it and need more repairs. On the other hand, I'm hearing that these cars go for a while. Just not sure. Thanks.

None of us can possibly know how your car will run over time, with a 50 mile a day commute, or what condition it currently is in: no model year or condition mentioned...

Also don't know your living situ, but 'moving' to reduce a reasonable commute seems like a pricey proposition; it's not like you are driving a dump truck or an F Car 50 miles a day, 'cost-wise', vs relocating.

Tires, brakes, brake fluid, belts, et al are standard maintenance items, over time/mileage...the Toyota Mavens will probably have anecdotal info on how it will run, over time. I suspect it will run OK, if it is in decent condition.

25 mile commute, each way, is pretty standard/low side for many metro areas... Or jump on public trans on occasion.

All cars "can go for awhile": two of mine are 13 and 12 yrs old, with 95k and 60k miles on them, but no crystal ball on your car.

What year is you Corolla? Might make a difference. But to show you it can be done, in 2004 I had a 96 mike round trip commute with a 1993 Nissan Sentra with over 100k on it already. I did that for a few months.I had to trade it on a new Saturn because the car really started going downhill. You have a shorter commute, and you are starting out with less miles on the car already. I wouldn't move.It is a Corolla. I might feel different if it was something else.

This is very helpful! My Corolla: It is a 2010. Bought in Dec. 2012 with 41,000 miles on it. Now I have 65 +. The commute is actually 52 miles, 26 miles each way. However, I am living in a very "cost-effective" apartment with everything, utilities included and am on a tight budget as it is. The place I am thinking of moving to is more expensive, but close to work, but all utilities are not included and of course they add up and I would need to buy 2 new a/c's. I feel like I am doing a lot of driving and just pushing the car, even though it's running well. I do the oil changes and maintenance when needed. I was thinking that maintenance will be need to be done more often and the expenses will be the same as moving. So is my commute mileage wise really not that bad compared to others? Thanks again.

Currently, I have a 40 mile round trip commute( much better than '04!) I drive a 2007 Accord with 72k on it currently.I don't worry about the miles.Just keep up on the maintenance. I think you will be fine for a while.

And if you happy where you're living, stay there! you don't know how bad your new neighbors or landlord might be,lol.

exnj1970--what was your commute in 04? How long do you think "a while" is for my car? Thanks.

It was 43 miles each way,96 miles a day in that 11 year old Sentra. Like I said, it was already over 100k (130k, if I remember correctly) I got about 6 months before I had to get rid of it. The front end rotted through, so I don't think I can blame the commute. That would have happened anyway. The engine and drivetrain were still good.

As for your car,it is hard for me to say how long "a while" is. I am no mechanic, but I wouldn't worry until 100k. Even then, as long as you keep up maintenance, and follow the owners manual's scheduled maintenance, you can go well past that(and I never really maintained my Sentra). Hondas and Toyotas are great cars built for the long run.

Maine, that is a lot of driving. 182,000--hard to believe. I guess I have to build my car expense, besides the gas of course, into my current rent. I am trying to avoid having to buy a new car in the near future. Besides the obvious cost there, my credit is not as good as it was 2 years ago and I am worried about not being able to get another low interest car loan.

EXnj1970 thanks. I just hate seeing the mileage creep up so fast. 100,000 feels like it's going to be here next year.
