My transmission went out on my Camry recently. After calling around a few places to get the price for a rebuilt transmission installed, anywhere between $2750-$5000, I talked to a family friend that has worked on our families cars for years. I decided to let him put in a used transmission for about $1800, $300 labor $1400 transmission plus fluid and filter. He said he would have it done in a couple days it has now been eight days and I keep getting it will be done tomorrow.

My questions are is this job too much for an older shadetree mechanic than generally works on pick up trucks and older cars ? He did replace the transmission on my dads 1998 Ford Ranger. How many hours is this job suppose to take ?

Hmm. Maybe the transaxle has him stymied if he normally works on RWD vehicles.

Unless he's doing it in his free time (assuming he has a job), you should have had that thing back in 2-3 days at the most.

The "it'll be done tomorrow" thing over and over, has me concerned. Like "he broke it" concerned. lol

The 2007 is a lot different from a 1998, and difficult without the proper equipment. That transmission has a control module that has to be in synch or will not operate properly. That particular Camry had downshift issues and if you do some research will probably find a later software upgrade that your friend would not have access to. Typically used transmissions will not have a warranty, especially if not installed by a certified mechanic, and he may have gotten it in but not driveable. In that case he would have trouble figuring out whether it's a bad transmission or his installation. I have also done transmission, engine, and clutch swaps over the years, (1-2 days) but I wouldn't attempt an automatic, especially after about 2000 when they became even more dependent on electronics.

And being its a V6, I bet that's one crowded engine bay. He's likely in over his head.
