I personally think Toronto is on the right path discouraging car ownership. Drivers should pay for the pollution/noise/congestion they are causing to others citizens.
nothing but taxes taxes taxes in this country, whats next.......... they will tax us on the air we breathe. "Anyone who takes more than 200 breathes per hour will be recieve a 50 dollar fine" This is ******* ****

Canada certainly is a high tax country, but Toronto is higher taxed than most of Canada...
This $60 city vehicle fee is very similar to the $75 "wheel tax" than Chicago has. City of Chicago Vehicle Sticker Purchase (http://www.chicityclerk.com/licenses/online_index.html - broken link)
My thoughts as much as the libertarian in me believes that any citizen should be able to sue a polluter for poisoning his personal space ie lungs, The tragedy is Miller has offered ver little in alternatives for cars. The ttc is no better than when I was stuck riding the rocket and that was 15 years ago, forget the other levels of government lazy excuse, really why would people in Saskatoon want to pay taxes to the ttc anyway. Im amazed the city won't just move ahead and improve local service. Really how hard would it be charge different rates depending on how busy the service route was. Hey I would be willing to pay $5 at 3am just to ride the subway home after a night at the clubs rather than drive home, hey this would allow me to actually drink when I'm out. High taxes in Toronto won't do anything other than drive productive jobs and citizens to move to the suburbs. I admit that's why I chose to live in Mississauga. Ironically as more citizens escape to the Toronto tax free havens likea Vaughan and Mississauga more suburbanites will end up driving into Toronto when required. Worst part of this is Miller's tax won't do anything to help clear the air from smog because the regressive tax(revenue theft device) isn't earmarked for planting trees, improving public transit or even paying toward any car sharing programs, it is disappearing into the city hall coffers pig trough. I bet the extra money will make it easier to justify to accounting the next councillor pay raise.
So, let me get this straight.
I am on the Toronto/Mississauga border. I really can't get any closer to the border that most others. I have a "416" area code. My neighbour has a "905" area code. We both drive the exact same car for the exact same kilometers per year.
I need to pay $60.00 because I am supposedly "blessed" to live in Toronto. This is bulsh** in it's finest definition! What has Toronto ever done for me while I lived in the city for 34 years?
1. Offered discounted alternative transportation costs. Ummm, no. The fee imposed by the TTC is stupidity as well. I pay $2.50 if I travel across the street, or $2.50 if I travel all the way to Scarborough, and I do not receive a tax break from the Toronto government!
2. Fix the roads? Heellll NO! There are more traffic delays, road construcutions and potholes in Toronto than anywhere else! They don't even plow some city streets anymore! Do, the lack of clean and drivable roads increases congestion and therefore pollution in the city!
3. There are alternatives, such as bike lanes? How many bike lanes are there in the city of Toronto, we probably have one of the smallest number of bicycle lanes in the damn universe! Hell, Mars probably has more kilometers of bicylce lanes than the fair city of Toronto!
4. I've been taxed because I drive several times! There are taxes on top of taxes. There's probably a 5% tax tax. You know the 5% tax that is added to the other taxes you need to pay in this city!
It's damn tiring all the taxes we citizens continue to pay. Let's see, there are the following (now I am talking about all of Canada not just Toronto!)
1. GST (I think it's now at 5%)
2. PST (This is still 8%)
3. Driving Tax ($60.00)
4. Land Transfer Tax
There are others, but those are off the top of my brainless head!
I'd like to tax the government on it's stupidity and ineptitude to do anything right for the citizens ( a $50.00 tax for saying something stupid in front of the Toronto public!)

I remeber back in 2003/2004 there were rumours about the profit made by car insurance companies in Toronto/GTA.... 800% !!!! That's not bad at all....though not sure about the legall part....

Chicago and Toronto are alike after all...
This is not that uncommon in many cities. I would not object to it IF they removed the parking meters or at least allowed residents with a city sticker to not have to feed the meters.
