I am considering moving to Marshall for a job I was wondering how the place is such as are there certain areas to avoid and how are the schools? Does anyone know how much a decent3 bedroom house would be to rent outside of town? Also is there a llt to do? Any pictures or info would be appreciated.
I am moving from Ky.

You should visit first and get a local to show you around.

Marshall is unimpressive as you drive through on 80, 59 or 43 ... but does have some very nice sections. I have worked with people from Marshall and they loved it there. Those of us who just pass through or visit occasionally have obviously missed something.

Jefferson is just to the north, Hallsville is 15 to 20 minutes to the west, Longview (3 school districts in Longview) is another 10 to 15 minutes further west. Those may be better options for schools.

east TX has different mind set than Dallas or FTW or especially Austin--make sure you do visit before you take job offer--
older town--does have some nice areas but also low income sections--

not much going on there--not much in way of retail/entertainment so check how your lifestyle would fit--big church town
--some people work in shreveport and drive back and forth to avoid LA state income tax--and at one time they thought public schools were better than Shreveport public schools--don't know about now...

Lived there once upon a time, pretty much, if you have to move to Marshall, make sure you settle in East Marshall or the new planned subdivision in South Marshall off of 59s. Marshall is starting to get a few more restaraunt choices than they used to have.

Marshall is surrounded by beautiful pine forests, the city itself is not terribly attractive other than some beautiful residential neighborhoods. It is very convenient to shopping and other amenities in Shreveport or Longview.

Personally, not crazy about the mindset in the town, but if you don't mind very conservative atmosphere then maybe not so bad. The schools are fairly decent and are definately much better than Shreveport. As a former Marshall resident I would highly suggest Hallsville, or Longview rather than living in Marshall proper. I moved there from Shreveport for a little while and very much so regretted it.
