Why bother with getting on I-20 if you're coming from FL on I-10 to begin with? You're going to turn off from I-10 anyway.

I 10 has some big cities to go through. I 20 only has one through Dallas.

Ummmm...you're speaking of INTERSTATE highways - not stop-and-go traffic! It makes absolutely no sense to go as far out of the way as IH-20 would be compared to the straight shot offered by IH-10.

It's not just Dallas - it's Dallas AND Ft. Worth - and that is a long metropolitan corridor. On IH-10 you have the option of totally bypassing New Orleans by taking IH-12, reconnecting with IH-10 afterward. As long as you don't hit either Houston or San Antonio right at rush hour, the passage should be no sweat.

It's a road trip, he wants to see Austin and Dallas, so what is wrong with that? It's about the journey.

However, if the OP was just wanting to see Austin, then maybe take I-35 up to Austin from San Antonio, then head due west on 290 through the Hill Country... can stop in Fredricksburg, see Enchanted Rock state park, etc.

That's NOT the reason the OP gave for the route being chosen! There is NO MENTION of Austin in this thread. Nor is there anything said about desiring to "see" Dallas.

going so far out of your way for no particular reason than just to avoid "big" cities is pretty lame...
he could be through the big cities on I-10 before he drove up and back from Dallas--and there is nothing that great to see along the way anyway...
