It's one of the biggest towns in that region of the state and yes, there are things to do there. The beach is nearby, there are restaurants, clubs, movie theatres, lots of young people and AA's as well. It's also not very far from Houston (abt. 45 minutes away), so if you get tired of what's in LJ, then just drive up 288 and Boom! You're practically in downtown Houston. I grew up in nearby Brazoria and my dad lived in LJ for many years until recently.

I live in Surfside, about 10 miles from Lake Jackson. There is not much to do there. Several restaurants that are VERY good (Cafe Annice, Smithharts) but the majority of them are chain restaurants. There IS a mall in LJ but it is small. There's a Walmart of course and a Target. But - stuff to do? Depends on what you like - we have a GREAT recreation center, and of course the beach. But when I was single and living in LJ I went to Houston EVERY weekend for something to do.
As far as race - I would say you will not find much diversity in Lake Jackson - the nearby areas of Clute and Freeport are more diverse, and let me tell you if you like Mexican food, Clute has more mexican food options than you'd believe.
If you like Country Music - Angleton has a kicker nightclub that stays open until 2:00. In Lake Jackson, there are three bars I think, Rickochets (pool hall) and Shooters 2 (bands sometime) and the third one is at a hotel. Chemical Plants EVERYWHERE down here. But you don't see them in LJ. And all the LJ bars close at 12:00 except on Saturdays 1:00 am.
What in the world kind of a job would have you transfer to Lake Jackson - it is just SUCH a small town! Good luck, if you have any specific questions direct message me!
By the way, if you have children, you won't find a better place to raise them. At the plant I work at, we have a very hard time getting single people to come here (except beach bums like me) because of the limited social stuff. But a young couple with kids - not so hard to convince. And a guy that likes to hunt and fish will be in heaven down here.
And the bottom line is - you are only about 40 minutes from Pearland and 50 from Houston so you can find something to do there!

LOL.

Yeah, I've heard of this mythical 3rd ward, too...

But, to answer the OP's question, I worked on some of thsoe crewboats docked down in Free(k)port and later worked at a plant there as well in a past lifetime...and went to Brazosport College for a couple of semesters.

While it's not Houston (where I was born and raised), there should be just enough in the Brazosport area to keep you entertained. I don't know anything in regareds to alcohol serving establishments, since hanging out with people while inhaling others clouds of smoke isn't on my docket.
