This is an idea that i've had for sometime now, but I've always thought there should be a new interstate corridor that links Dallas to San Angelo and beyond.I-16 would be the number and it would replace u.s.67 from I-35e to San Angelo,Fort Ftockton,or maybe even Alpine/Marfa.This I-16 corridor would Not link the current I-16 that runs from Macon to Savannah.I-16 sems to be a reasonable number due to the fact u.s.67 is more east and west from dallas westward. There already two I-76s and two I-86s why not another chapter in I-16s book,That's why I put I-16(west) as the title.

The parallel I-20 already exists and goes through more important places in West Texas. Extending I-27 from Lubbock to San Antonio along U.S. 87 (maybe threading it through Midland or include a spur to Midland or to I-20 halfway between Midland-Odessa) might be a better idea for an alternate route to the Panhandle.

Ain't happening. Making U.S. 67 an interstate is not even remotely a priority. The U.S. 67 corridor does just fine like it is now. I wouldn't mind if they widened the two-lane stretches, but other than that, the highway is just fine. The freeway stretches in Dallas do need widening, but 67 doesn't need drastic recategorization. My contention has always been to get Lubbock connected to the rest of Texas, as well as Austin connected to Houston with an upgrade to U.S. 290 to interstate standards, in addition to already-made plans for I-69 to go along the U.S. 59 corridor, and plans for Ports-To-Plains plus a Fort Worth-to-Amarillo corridor. That's pretty much going to be it.

Case - I agree with you on what should be a priority but I would make sure that the spur of I-69 to Corpus Christi/Brownsville is completed before the spur to Laredo. The reason for this is simple: Laredo already is serviced by an interstate; the RGV is not.

I fully agree. 69 will probably be done piecemeal, anyway. You guys will get it.

The Trans-Texas Corridor plan was just shot down; it would have had a somewhat similar route. I like US 67 quite a lot once I get beyond (southwest of) Glen Rose. It's a pain from there back to Dallas.

New interstates that are needed IMO:

Amarillo - Wichita Falls - Fort Worth (Currently US 287)

Lubbock - Fort Worth (Currently US 82/SH 114/SH 199)

Lubbock - Midland (Currently US 87/SH 349)

Lubbock - San Angelo - Austin (Currently US 87/SH 71)

San Angelo - Del Rio (Currently US 277)

Austin - Houston (Currrently US 290)

I agree concerning the US 287 and US 290 routes (although US 290 west of Austin is a favorite road of mine). The others, not so much; they just don't seem all that congested to me. I prefer ordinary highways to interstates where the latter aren't necessary. But I'm looking at it from a motorcycle-touristy point of view.

287 between Amarillo and Wichita Falls works just fine, IMHO. So you have to slow down when traveling through the towns, no big deal. If they do anything to 287 they should widen it to 4 lanes from Stratford all the way up to Limon, CO.

The only one I would agree with in this thread is the 290 Austin - Houston route. I hardly see enough traffic on any of the others.....
