The saddest thing about this question is I have been here for a while.
anyone know of a good site to find out what is going on in Texas? Living in the center makes it easy to get around... 1h to Austin, 1h to Waco, 2h Aan Antonio, 2h Dallas/Fort Worth, 4h-ish to Houston. So the problem for me is being is when I get there I don't really know what to do, best places to eat, etc. Also same goes for the small towns. I to get out and drive and now that the gas is down for a while (I hope) I would like get out and about.

I like to go do stuff but I keep finding out about it after the fact.

I guess one question someone would ask me is what I like. I primarily like music, basically anything goes. I'm more of a don't knock it til you do/try it.

Example. If i am in the mood to see an IMAX movie I go to San Antonio but I hate to just go and that's all I end up doing.

This would probably be a good place to start. TravelTex Home You can check the various towns and see what events will be taking place wherever you go.

Sounds like you are in the Ft Hood area.
Music: depends on what you like. If you like country/bluegrass, then The Grove Jamboree every Sat nite\

Food: hit the road and just be adventurous! stop at a mom-n-pop place Read Ft Hood's free newspapers-they often have reviews of restaurants in the area, or go to KDH Forum-FOOD section.

Things to do: Topsey Exotic Animal Safari in Topsey, Dr Pepper Museum in Waco, Texas Rangers Musueum in Waco. Waco Zoo. BLORA.

Fairs/Festivals-there are so many right now, I don't have time for them all. You can find out about them from local paper or the local TV news on TV or online

Rodeos/Western Events: Can be found most every weekend at Wildfire Ranch in Salado or Circle T Arena in Hamilton or Little Bear Arena in Lampasas. Jackpot ropin's and playdays just about everywhere

Other Sports: Drag racing in Killeen every Sat nite, mudboggin' in Cove on weekends. I am sure there are plenty more

Surf www.texasescapes.com and snoop around what's neat around the area.

Let me recommend Austin. You like live music?? They've got lots of it, plus great sightseeing.

Texas Country Reporter-on RFD TV on weekends, has a list of festivals and going-ons at the end of the show.
Your local TV stations website-e.g. KWTX WACO etc.
and if you really are in the Ft Hood area, the local free newspapers of Ft Hood that are found everywhere, at fillin' stations etc, are good about listing stuff. e.g. FT HOOD SENTINEL

I second Austin! So much to see and do there. Tell us what type of music you like and we can recommend venues to check out. There are lots of things to see there...

Barton Springs Pool
Zilker Park
SoCo area
The Capitol
6th Street (depending on your age!)
Town Lake (Lady Bird Lake)
The bats (actually they have probably migrated by now)

For music...
The Broken Spoke on S. Lamar (country)
Ginny's Little Longhorn Saloon (check out Chicken sh*t bingo on Sunday afternoons 4-8 pm)...located at 5434 Burnet
Continental Club--S.Congress (different types of music each night)

Waco also has it own little miniature version of 6th Street called Austin Ave. Crazy clubs like Wild Wild West, are chill at Ninfas or Diamondbacks. A bar like Ice House or Treffs(???). In the daytime you can go to Cameron Park, visit the museums like Dr. Pepper or Mayborn mesum or vist the Zoo.
