This is just my opinion. I think one benefit Dallas has over Atlanta is that it isn't a capital city. While Austin benefits naturally from being the state capital, Dallas benefits from being a national, regional, state, and local market. This is why one will find companies having numerous warehouses within the North Texas region.

Again, look at how incredible Atlanta is as a regional center and, yet, it isn't surrounded by major cities as is the North Texas region. Miami is so far away from Atlanta that it is a similar regional city in and of itself. One could put Phoenix in the same category. Both Chicago and Toronto are also major regional cities.

What makes Dallas and Houston different is their close proximity to each other without any major populations between the two. From a distance, one could view both as really a single market.

Having the North Texas region so close is a boon for Austin and just the other way around. Companies will relocate to the area because they know ample amounts of skilled high tech employees work in both markets. So, both the North Texas region and Austin are also symbiotic, economically speaking.

Another example of what I speak is the Fort Worth and Wichita markets concerning the aerospace industries. Both of these markets have lots of aerospace employees which is a boon to each market when viewed from a distance.

The Houston area itself is also a regional destination because of its shear size and its major sea port. Still, the North Texas region is the primary Chicago-like market which is symbiotic with the cities and states surrounding it.

I think Houston is overrated. I think Dallas and Austin much better. But I think they're all good.

Rachel Ray on Jimmy Kimmell last night:

"Austin is Utopia, I would move here if I didn't have my show in NYC".

Please stay right where you are Rachel.

The city that didn't even make this poll... or so many others. That "overrated, overhyped" city?

Oklahoma City and Shreveport are closer to Dallas than Houston is.

That'd be one hell of a commute.

Charlotte, Nashville, Asheville, Tallahassee, Birmingham, and Savannah are all similar distances from Atlanta as Houston is from Dallas.

Houston is underrated, I've met people from alot different countries and cities in the US. Majority of them are shocked at the size of Houston and the diversity of Houston. Houston is a truly international city.
