I was looking at homes on the West side and loved the houses there but everything is selling really fast. If I get lucky, I'd like to buy a house there. It probably won't happen so I'm looking at other parts of Temple. How is the E Adams Ave area between 290 and 363? I drove through and it didn't look as nice as the more rural looking parts on the West side of Temple but is it a bad area?

IF that part of Temple is considered bad... How bad are we talking? Is it like Killeen and parts of Houston bad? Is it the kind of place you don't want to stop at red lights at night? How are the local stores? Would you be concerned if your spouse went to the gas stations or grocery stores alone around there?

I would strongly recommend renting a house for a year to give yourself time to look around. If you find a house you like, park in the neighborhood for a few evenings and take a walk around. Spend some time there on a Friday/Saturday night to see if you like the vibe. Go to the stores where you see yourself shopping. If you don't get a good feeling, scratch that house off the list and go to the next one. Don't make a single visit at 10:30 on a Tuesday morning with a realtor and decide that you love the quiet neighborhood. It may not be so quiet at 10:00 on a Friday night.

Best of luck to you.
