My wife and I are interested in the extreme NE of the state. Any recommendations for nice small towns near Texarkana?

I'm not an expert on the region but I'm thinking that Jefferson will easily be the best small town north of I20. Historic downtown directly inbetween the Caddo Lake swamp to the east and some hilly terrain to the west around Lake o the Pines.

It's been years since I've seen that part of Texas but I can't forget how pretty it is up there.

Depends on how small you want. Jefferson has a 'cute' downtown but is run down outside of that. Atlanta has more shopping options and is closer to Texarkana. There really aren't many options other than those two which come to my mind (and I grew up in NE TX).

We don't need a lot of amenities. Mostly just looking for reasonably priced land/houses, nice scenery, basic places to shop (Walmart, HEB, etc) and fairly safe. Good schools would be good too but I know those arent always common in rural areas.
