Not a movie but the Netflix series Away with Hilary Swank is Houston to a T.

Right down to them having a Christmas pr
arty and basically wearing summer/fall clothes and the sun shining.

There's 1 twangy, cowboy like but really there are those types right on your neighborhood who act like this is the old, tumbleweed west and put in that bad W Bush accent whole the rest of us just say "y'all" and no accent other than that.

Best:
Sicario (partly centered in Texas - El Paso)

Worst:
Several of the Texas Chainshaw remakes.

Not a quintessential Texas movie and an acquired taste perhaps but it's a favorite of mine and hasn't been mentioned yet - True Stories. Puzzlin' Evidence indeed.

Off topic but I hate when Hollyweird portrays this state as either some dusty, dry place with nothing but ranches or filled to the brim with racists and uneducated people. Seems like we're stuck with these stereotypes no matter how much Texas grows or changes. End rant. Back to your regularly scheduled programming.

One of the worst casting jobs for a Texas flick was John Travolta in Urban Cowboy.
His New Jersey/“Texas” accent was laughable.

I’m a fan of how Richard Linklater and Mike Judge portray Texas.

A lot of people miss the point of Linklater’s movies and think there’s supposed to be a compelling plot or protagonists, but really he’s telling the story of central Texas in several of his films. “Dazed and Confused” for the 70s, “Everybody Wants Some” (which wasn’t nearly as good as Dazed) for the 80s, “Slacker” for the early 90s, “Boyhood” for the 2000s. “Bernie” is also a pretty loving portrayal of small-town Texas too.

The characters are slightly exaggerated for comedic effect obviously, but Mike Judge really is on point with “King of the Hill” and “Office Space”.

I thought Friday Night Lights was pure garbage.

The racism that was prevalent in the (incredible)book is just glossed over.

The rural white school are the heroes.

The inner city black school are the bad guys.

The game was not even the state title game as it was portrayed in the movie.

Varsity Blues was pure fiction and better than FNL.

FNL definitely played to a certain demographic.
