My husband and I are planning on relocating to Port Isabel Texas next summer. My husband will be retired but I still need to work, I am hoping to find a position in Harlingen near by. We live near Chicago Illinois and can not wait to get out of the cold. We are not strangers to the hot weather or living in Texas.

We lived in Texas about 20 years ago and my father retired in Port Isabel and lived there for 20 years.
We really like the Bayview area and would like to know if any locals have advice for us before we make the big move.
We were in Texas last month for 2 weeks looking at areas from San Antonio, Austin, Corpus Christi until we ended in Port Isabel again.
Since I still need to work I do not want to deal with the crazy traffic of the other towns. I know I will taking a drastic salary cut which is expected.
Can anyone tell me if the areas in and around Port Isabel are safe and what type of entertainment could I look forward to?
Thank you for any advice you can give

I suppose Port Isabel and South Padre are both relatively safe compared to the Chicago area. I think Brownsville is about the same distance or actually closer to Port Isabel than Harlingen. As for entertainment you will have to be a little more specific. If it's night life you speak of, SPI has plenty during the busy months. The slow months run Oct through Feb although there is always something happening. You mentioned your husband retiring so maybe it's not night life you are referring to. You will find it very slow in comparison to the rat race of a big city. There are towns in between. You mentioned Bayview. Laguna Vista is another one.

Default also moving to area

My husband and I are also moving to the area hopefully in the next 3 months. I hope to be working in Harlingen and we will be looking to buy a home around Laguna Vista or Port Isabel. My Husband is retired and I work. We are originally from St. Louis area, but have been living the last year in San Antonio and we hate it. Kind of looking for a slower pace of life and a beach community. So be nice to meet some people. we hope to be coming in the next month to look at some homes and make some offers there are so many amazing prices in the area compared to here or for that matter st Louis where we are from. I think as far as Safety goes I think you have to take things with a grain of salt and protect yourself just as you would anywhere else in the country. we have a dog, own a gun, get a security system, that being said the rest is up to happenstance. Whatever will be will be. we are all about enjoying life so do it while we still can.

Traffic in Port Isabel can come to a standstill during Spring Break. I've seen the causeway back up for miles. That's only 3 weeks out of the year that you risk it though.

If you like fishing or water sports you will like it a lot there.

Default Yacht Club Hotel

What is going to happen to the Yacht Club Hotel? We used to stay there when we visited Pot Isabel.
