Hi I am looking for some input regarding which cities are safe to raise a family. I have a job in Big Spring Texas. I have four children. I have heard that Big Spring has a ton of drugs and crime. Is this true? I am moving from Michigan. Any advice is appreciated Thank you

You have heard correctly. Plus, Big Spring is literally in the middle of nowhere. Unfortunately, unless you want to make a long (1.5 hour) commute to Midland or Abilene, you are stuck living there.

Well I think some rural areas of Howard County like Forsan have a better reputation than Big Spring but imo Christie is right.....Big Spring is horrible.I have made the drive from Midland to Big Spring many times and it is not 1.5 hours.Mapquest puts it at 42 minutes.Stanton in Martin county is better than Big Spring I think.

With the oil fields causing a housing shortage in Midland, that would be the LAST place you'd want to try to find a place to live!

Westerntraveler Why do you think Big Spring is horrible? I am looking for honest answers. This is a big decision for my family. And I have to admit I am a little bit nervous. I will take a look at Stanton. Thank you

Lets see....lots of drugs like meth, violence like shootings and stabbings, gangs, state hospital, and prisons.....horrible schools. Also, there is a petroleum refinery that has blown up before.I am from Midland BTW so I am somewhat familiar with Big Spring. That is my honest opinion.Netime.
P.S.
I also lived in Big Spring.

Why is everyone so set on the Midland/Odessa/Big Spring area of West Texas as if it's the ONLY place in Texas with plentiful jobs in the industry??

OP- look into jobs elsewhere, really. You and your family would be miserable in Big Spring.

There are TONS of industry jobs available in and around Corpus Christi, San Antonio, and a half dozen other fairly sizeable places in Texas with actual cities and nice, liveable areas. Hell, it doesn't even have to involve the fracking or field operations segments of the industry; a buddy of mine just got hired hauling fuel in Austin with only 3 months experience as a driver, and an acquaintance of his got hired to make big bucks handling logistics for a large drilling company out of their corporate office in Dallas.

If I were you, I really would look anywhere else because there are jobs all over. Good luck either way!

Thanks for all the honest input. The only reason I was looking in Big Spring is because that is where the job offer is. I'm just not sure if I want to take it or not. I have lived in Michigan my whole life. I do not want to move my children to an unsafe area. So all of you are helping me with my decision thank you very much.
