It being the first of May and not moving till around September I have a few months to "explore" online & figure out the areas/cities best for me.

I'd rather avoid big cities, smaller is nice

No High-crime area

I'm conservative in nature but not radically so

Income is Social Security so need lower cost of living

I'd rather be on the "dry side" of the weather but I'm used to high heat and high humidity

Seems like "way south" is out -

I can't figure out the weather except I guess West is dry and east is more rain?

Any other considerations to be aware of?

Suggestions appreciated much!

Default Howdy!

Howdy ,and welcome to Texas.
Check out Comfort, Utopia, and Leakey. All are in our beautiful Texas hill country and all are
conservative in nature. Comfort is probably the best as far as being close to hospitals, big city shopping
and airport.

Another great area with a low cost of living and plenty of green, rolling hills and lots of trees is the Tyler/Longview area. I love the proximity to D/FW and Shreveport just off Interstate 20. Housing is very affordable, the people are friendly, and crime rates are low.

In Tyler, you may get lucky and find a cute garage apartment or detached apartment in the Azalea District (historic homes). Those are usually very affordable and the neighborhood is absolutely beautiful, with lots of sidewalks, parks, etc. Perfect for a single woman.

Good luck!

San Angelo. Low cost of living, low humidity, and lots of retirees.

Tyler and Longview are extremely humid!

Hill Country land is $$$. It's beautiful, but would be tough on your budget.

You may want to consider the area near Columbus or Sealy. Both are close to Houston and in Columbus, you're about 2 hours from Austin and San Antonio.

Columbus is a great place. Also, LaGrange, Smithville, and Bastrop. These places have elevation, thus less humidity than coastal areas.

San Angelo would definitely be a good choice for the reasons you just stated.

I would agree with LaGrange and San Angelo but the cost of living in Angelo may get expensive due to the oil boom as it has in Midland.Housing is also an issue in San Angelo.LaGrange may be too hot and humid for you...I read somewhere that its the 6th hottest place in the state but Idk if thats true or not.

San Angelo is 1.5 hours from Midland. I'm sure a few people are willing to make that drive, but not a whole lot. Housing has always been busy in San Angelo due to GAFB and ASU.

well I talked to a friend and Ive read here that its getting even worse cuz the oil boom is moving to that area and I was not talking about people commuting to San Angelo from Midland.
