I am currently a resident of a state in the west coast, but I moved to Austin last week to get started on research with a prof over the summer (as a volunteer, not RA) before I start my phD program in the fall at UT Austin. I hope to stay here for the ~6 years it takes to complete the phD. However, things may not work out and I may have to transfer to another school

I believe I am guaranteed a TAship for at least my first 2 years that also covers the out of state tuition.

Is there anything I need to do in term of things that concern TX law requirements? Must I establish TX residency immediately?

I have my car with me, but my license plate and drivers license still says I'm from the west coast state. Do I need to do anything like change my drivers license/license plate/etc. to Texas? I am planning on keeping the car for just a few more months, since I only really use it for grocery shopping

I heard there's some law in TX that says you must get your drivers license and license plate within 30 days? But is that worth it if I probably will only keep my car for only a few more months, and I only use it currently for grocery shopping?

there is a new grad student orientation that covers establishing TX state residency, but that won't be until August? Is there anything I have to do now? Or can I just wait until then?

Just a guess on my part, but it likely depends on whether you're actually changing your residency - giving up residency where you came from. IOWs, a matter of "intent." If intent is to establish residency in Texas - even though you may not intend to stay forever - then the laws would certainly apply concerning car registration and driver's license.

Since I think I have to change my residency eventually, is there any benefit to doing it now as opposed to waiting/procrastinating?
