For some reason I was thinking about driving out to West Texas area just to check out what is there. One of my co-workers said I was just going to waste my vacation time since there really is nothing out there in west Texas.
Is there anything there of real interest to see in west Texas?

So far only thing I have heard off is the McDonald Observatory and the Marfa lights. Not sure if it worth the trip just to see that though.

Carlsbad Caverns is just over the border in New Mexico and Roswell is a little further north.

There is something out there but really... it's a matter of perspective.

I think there is a lot to see, but you have to appreciate the area. I like to see the countryside (especially the way it changes at the edge of the Caprock), the little towns, the almost unlimited visibility, etc....but I like solitude, and there is plenty of that. It's refreshing after being stuck in the ratrace in DFW.

Would say the drive on I-10 is any bit scenic? I know speed limit there is 80 mph since it is in middle of nowhere.

The Davis Mountains are lovely in the Spring especially. Alpine and the town of Fort Davis are worth visiting. The old army Fort Davis is worth visiting as well. Not as far into West Texas, but I think San Angelo is worth a brief visit. Old Fort Concho there is cool and it's especially good the days in December when they have the Christmas at Old Fort Concho festival. It really depends what you're into. The museum at Texas Tech and the Ranch Heritage Center connected to the museum are pretty enjoyable.

It's already too late to be able to really enjoy the desert regions - IMO! Best time for visiting is in the fall when winds aren't as much of an issue, but it's much too hot everywhere for me from late April to early October.

Agree - Balmorhea is worth a visit. I haven't been there since I was a kid but it's beautiful and oasis-like.

El Paso is one of the safest cities in the country, despite what's happening over in Ciudad Juarez. The manicured lawns and shrubbery in El Paso are something to see. It's perhaps the most unique Texas city apart from San Antonio.
