Default Amarillo

Jenny -- I hope you made it our here. If so, I apologize for the terrible heat last summer! 2011 was not a typical year for us. Otherwise, Amarillo is one of the best cities to live in. Our economy is great and the people are nice. Stay in southwest Amarillo for the best area of the city.

Good Luck!

You've probably taken in everything Amarillo has to offer in 1 day then etx. It is flat and windy. If you don't mind living elbow to elbow with a bunch of people who have their nose stuck straight up in the air....Amarillo is ok.

As far as housing, it's a little on the high end compared to cities around the DFW metroplex comparing apples to apples. You get less house for your money in the Amarillo area. Amarilloans are very proud people.

We transferred with our jobs here a little over two years ago, from DFW. Amarillo definitely doesn't share many of the headaches of Dallas, but also misses some of the conveniences. Housing is reasonable, although rather limited. Employment is mostly agricultural and service oriented. Of most difference is the environment. The weather is rather harsh, with strong winds, dust storms, and good snows. It is markedly colder here than the rest of Texas, which is quite an advantage in summer. One major drawback is the awful odors blown up from a southwest wind-- the cattle feedlots can overpower. We just received orders to transfer to Louisiana so our stay here is over. If I were to be permanent here, my long term concern would be the water supply and the wildfires.

There was some freakish hail up there yesterday. If you google hail in Amarillo, you'll see it's an annual event.

Hail is an annual event all over the panhandle. Used to live in Muleshoe, and in the 10 years I spent there, I replaced 3 roofs. Before that, Shallowater for 5 years, and replaced a roof there as well. Now outside Amarillo, and just waiting for another hailstorm to take out my roof.

We have had hail several times this year already, but the one yesterday was a wild time. North of Amarillo was a DOOZY.

Sadly..... yes

Of course when you use the phrase "ALL", you are referring to "both", right?

sigh

The ever present southwesterly wind makes trees lean that way. Much the same all over the South Plains, however.
