What is the job market like for Mesquite and the surrounding area for a military vet and his family? Also, how does the general per hour pay compare to cost of living? AND my final question, lol, what is the average cost for a 3bed/2ba house to rent? I know with all the foreclosures rentals have probably gone up. Thanks guys!

Well, Mesquite itself is not exactly a job hub, but it's an inner-ring burb with easy access to Dallas. I can easily drive to downtown Dallas in 20 minutes without getting on a single freeway. I'm not sure what kind of work you are looking for, but far East Dallas/West Mesquite has a lot of industrial plants, blue collar type work.

Houses in Mesquite typically cost anywhere between $60,000-$200,000. No mansion neighborhoods here. Rent is reasonable. My neighborhood is literally half Dallas/half Mesquite. I just happen to live on the Dallas side in a 3bed/1bath, but my rent is $800. I'll go ahead and say it, I don't live in the nicest neighborhood. You won't find rent much cheaper than mine, and in the nicer neighborhoods rent can go up to $1,200 or $1,300. But it's not like my neighborhood is dangerous or anything either, just old.

If you have kids that are going to school, look east of 635, south of I-30 and north of Highway 80. Those are the best schools in the district. Poteet is a great high school and is severely underrated and overlooked because it's in Mesquite.

Thank you. Schools will become an issue soon as my daughter will be starting kindergarten when we move there. As for what kind of work, it's really a frustrating question for me. He says he doesn't know/care what kind of work, a job is a job. But yet whenever I find something for him to apply for he always he's not interested in it. He used to say he was interested in things like police depts, emt, fire... that kind of stuff. But now he has changed his mind and I have a feeling we're going to be running around at the last minute trying to do everything.

Well, if he has any desire, Garland police is hiring right now. I think the exam is towards the end of this month.

Default Jobs in Mesquite

Mesquite Police test the first Friday of each month. They have an excellent pay/benefit package, along with a new police station and cutting edge equipment. The citizens of Mesquite are supportive of the Department and its a good place to live and work.

Here is their link:

Police Department - City of Mesquite, TX

When looking at public safety jobs in Texas, remember that many municipalities are state civil service and give 5 bonus points to veterans on the entrance exam.

Good Luck!
