I am 5 years from retirment and would like to find a wooded lot 1-2 acres that would be reasonable in price near sa or austin. Any suggestions about where to start looking? I really like the area west of Austin and west of San Antonio, but I am open.

if you are retired military, then San Antonio would be the choice because of Wilford Hall Medical Center/Lackland AFB and Brooks Army Medical Center.
i would look at Castroville/Hondo area

Yes: Comfort, Texas. Beautiful acreages of 5-6 going for around 30-40k. I'm not a realtor, but just a man looking for land with a little over a grand, lol.

Depends on where you are from and what you call reasonable I guess! The closer to one of the cities, SA or Austin you go the higher the price gets. Last time I heard any prices for land in the area was out on 1326 past sisterdale, texas with direct rd access to 1326 and it was for 55k an acre for about 25 acres next I heard it was not on the market so someone must have bought it.

Good luck on your quest-- lots of people want just a few acres in the hill country. Course I got mine!

About 1 mile north of the center of Sisterdale off of 1376 and about 3 mile off of that. Diamond K is the largest place next to us. They have a website cause they are a game ranch of sorts.

Its lit up like a christmas tree now days compared to when I grew up and that was not to long ago (only 37 thank ya! ) but the land has been in my family a long long time and has loads of history, couple of clashes between Indians and the Mexicans way back when..also old stagecoach stop from the Pinta Trail on it. I don't think the price of land is going down anytime soon..and well if it does so what. Running as many cows out there for the ag credit as the land will let me and in the hill country that is not much! Have a feral hog problem right now and there is a mountain lion roaming over them there hills also! However right now I live outside of Austin in Leander, and love this area of the hill country also. Grew up playing on Lake Buchanan..just love the Hill country I could go on for days....but alas I won't
