My parents are looking to move to Texas and they prefer that it would be a small town. Two towns that they have talked about is Sonora and Alice Texas. Is there anyone on the forum who can shed some light into what life is like in these 2 towns? Any help will be appreciated.

I stay in Sonora for only one day so I'm not an expert, but it seemed like a nice, scenic little town. I've stayed in Alice TX a couple times and wasn't impressed. It reminded me of an old factory town. Again, I am no expert on the city.

Texas has a lot of small towns, if you list some of the features your folks want to have, I am sure that members will post a lot of places.

That was my thought as well Cowboybootnut! I think Texas has LOTS of GREAT small towns and many with much more charm and appeal than Sonora or Alice - not that anything is wrong with either town - I think Alice is close enough to Corpus Christi to have that 'next door' to a larger city appeal.....Sonora is a bit 'out there' from any major city - I guess the Midland-Odessa area would be considered the closest.

Your parents, depending on their age, need to consider their health care needs, ability to drive/shop for groceries, etc....also climate and any allergies - since parts of Texas can be more problematic for allergy sufferers than other parts.....

If you are in Austin - there are some really GREAT small towns around that area - like Bastrop for instance - or Lockhart or Luling, or Gonzales, or Hallettsville, or Franklin or Hearn or New Baden, and if your parents chose a place like Bastrop - they would be closer to you....in case they needed your help.

Sending them the best on their move! Texas is a BIG place.....there are small towns from top to bottom....all quaint and great in their own right....really depends on what your parents want in a lifestyle and how close they want conveniences if they choose to drive over to enjoy them! How about Brady and Belton too!!! There are just so many to choose from!!!

As far as Sonora goes, it's just a sleepy little West Texas town.

For major medical, the closest town of any size would be San Angelo, 65-70 miles north.

Midland and Odessa are also options, but not as close, 190 miles or so. Angelo would take care of most major medical.

I live in Paris, Tx which is in Northeast Texas. Paris was chosen as the best small town in Texas. Might give it a look!!

Surprisingly, some people like sleepy little West Texas towns, instead of smoggy ozone polluted areas like I live in.

I thought Sonora had a cute, small downtown area, and it is not too far away from San Antone. (2-3 hrs)

LOL!! Having grown up in a sleepy little West Texas town not far from Sonora, I know what you mean!

I was surprised to see that they had gained a tiny bit in population in the last few years, too.
