My wife and I will be traveling to Denver from Austin next week and returning the following week. We plan to stop overnight in Amarillo each time. Can anyone recommend a decent hotel/motel close to Hwy 87?

The last time we made this trip years ago the only motels we found were pretty unpleasant places. We'd like to find a decent one this time.

Thanks, Ron

No one has any suggestions?

My own research indicates that these hotels look like good prospects:

Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites
2806 WOLFLIN AVENUE
AMARILLO , TX 79109, just south of I-40
Rated 4 stars out of 37 reviews. It is relatively new and clean with several restaurants nearby. Also the breakfast buffet is free. Web site price $109/night plus taxes.

Second choice: Ambassador Hotel 3100 West Interstate 40, Amarillo, TX 79102, must north of I-40
Rated 3.5 stars out of 171 reviews. Two restaurants on site, a $12.90 dinner credit is offered on the website. Website price $109/night plus taxes.

These are a little farther off my route then I was looking for but not by much. So I'm leaning toward the newer Holiday Inn Express. As it offers FREE internet access. As best I can tell the Ambassador charges for it.

I'm still interested in hearing others opinions. I have not booked anything yet.

Thanks...

My wife and I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express on the south side of Amarillo at 6701 Hollywood Road, Amarillo, TX‎ - (806) 352-1900‎. It may be newer. We stayed four nights and loved it.

The Ambassador is the classiest one in the area - it's where Oprah housed her staff when she did her show from Amarillo for a few months a few years ago (she stayed at a B&B). But there are some newer, chain places that have been built in the past few years on the west end of I-40 near the hospital district.

Glad you had a good experience
There are also some good places to eat close to either hotel:
BL Bistro, Marty's and Leal's among others
