Here we have a board that requires teachers to be certified in their subjects yet its run by a dentist with an engineering degree trying to re-write history.

The conservative wall st journal poll had 92% against re-writing the texts.

Article 7 Section 3b of the state constitution requires the board to provide free textbooks for our kids, however if they trash the current books years before their useful life ends, we will have to pay for more books.

I have three resolutions before my local school board condemning the SBOE - June 17.

Aside from the embarrassment it will hurt the growth of people coming to our state. Right now though we are the laughing stock of the educational world.

I've actually had friends from out of state get frustrated with ME because of it! These are normally rational people who are very upset by this nonsense. It is embarrassing.

Well, a couple of them are already out of a job - they lost the election and this is their last salvo before leaving office.

These people are a result of the closed minded governor Texas currently has. I sure don't know if Bill White has a chance, but I sure wish he would get in there and clean things up.

Texas doesn't have a chance to be helped. It's way too backwater.

These people are a result of the VOTERS of the state of TX who voted for these board members...
the Education board members are ELECTED by the voters--not appointed by the gov--
I don't like him but the same people who put him in office are the ones who put the board of education in office...

most people don't pay any attention and normally vote the party ticket--there are often no democrats running against republican candidates for the education board in the past--
this time there were SOME people whose seats were up and faced a more liberal opponent--
but not all of them won...
so basically unless the legislature revises the constitution's requirements for running to set some standards for background credentials (which it won't and really should not)
you are going to see any baseline improvment...
frankly if you don't like the people who are running----run yourself...
that is what we need...better choices in primaries...

TX is way too big - demographically and economically - to be ignored! Why do you think the textbook thing is so big? Because TX high schools dictate the national market. We need the smart people in TX - and there are plenty of them - to be in charge in here. Not the dumb ones - and there are plenty of them too. The U.S. needs the better Texas to prevail! Texas is not a backwater that can be safely neglected!

May the intellectual spirit of Molly Ivins triumph over the crooked know-nothingness of Tom Delay!!

if you think that is going to fly...good luck...
I doubt that any school board is going to do something that confrontational...they would consider it the kiss of death in all likelihood--even if they did agree with its sentiments...

my understanding is that Delay is finally going to go to trial for some of his shenanigans...
