Fear of blazes prompts officials to consider bans

With the Midstate on pace for the driest year since Harry S. Truman was president, some county officials are worried that the use of amateur fireworks during the Fourth of July could spark a fire disaster.

At least two counties that normally allow residents to shoot fireworks have banned them or are seeking to prohibit them this year. Other communities are vowing to strictly enforce existing fireworks bans.

Robertson County has put the decision in the hands of area fire chiefs. Each one makes the call for his own district, said County Mayor Howard Bradley, and to his knowledge, every chief has declared home fireworks illegal.

In Maury County, commissioners passed a resolution Monday requesting that the state institute a burning ban and prohibit the use of Independence Day fireworks.
