Marilyn - you should really consider giving the Tampa Bay Bagel Co. a try. The owners are both originally from New York and they are making them the traditional way on site, from dough to boiling to baking. I think you'll be pleased. They also hand-mix their cream cheese flavors, no pre-packaged stuff from some corporate distribution from who knows where.

I actually thought it was amazing that someone was starting a bagel shop in this economy, but they chose a great location and seem to already be doing good business. I'm not related to this business in any way, incidentally, I just really want to see them succeed and I want everyone who's got a hankering for a good bagel to give them a try.

I agree that the bagels at Dunkin Donuts don't really deserve to be called bagels. Frankly, the 7-11 has better bagels than DD and that's not saying much. Those flatbread sandwiches they have at DD are pretty good, though. On the other hand, I feel about bagels similar to how you describe your feelings towards pizza. I will eat even a bad bagel, but I really prefer good ones.

I'm in the St Pete area. Maybe I'll need to take a ride to the Tampa Bay Bagel Co. and buy a couple dozen and freeze them. I'll let you know how that goes.

Just curious: What do they charge per bagel? In NY it's between $.90 and $1.15 depending on where they are located.

$.99 each or $10.99/doz. Here's a link to their regular menu:

LOL, wow........I thought those were terrible compared to Einstein bros.

I have not tried that local place where they boil the dough and hand make the cheese from their own cows, i'm sure it's probably pretty good, but i'm not driving that far anybody's bagel.

I think Ray's New York Bagels in the frozen section at Publix are pretty darn good, especially if you don't want to travel far just for bagels. You can also buy boxes of bialys that are good, too.

Mar1lyn - at the two Publix I go to, they are in with the frozen breakfast items. If you don't see them, just ask, they may have them somewhere else in your Publix.

Mar1lyn27, you got me so hungry for bagels that I had to buy some of those Ray's NY bagels at Publix - just had one this morning - sesame, toasted with butter - mmmmmm-mmmmmm, soooo good! They really are about the best I've had.

Here is the website that tells more about these bagels:
