Hyde Park is one of the best neighborhoods in South Tampa located just off Bayshore Blvd--very close to downtown. There are some great shopping areas, historic homes, new condos and apartments. I think you may be referring to Davis Islands which is also very close to Hyde Park and downtown. Another area adjacent to Hyde Park which includes bars, restaurants is called SoHo (South of Howard) Here is a site that covers events in this area of town http://www.sohotampa.com/ Good luck getting to Tampa!

The houses are amazing--by FL standards, "historic" (60 years old or so). The shops in the shopping district are just chain stores, so that lacks the charm that places like Virginia-Highlands in Atlanta has. But it's a great area and there are apartments and single family homes and condos around. Housing is very expensive compared to other parts of Tampa.

I don't know Pierce Island. Davis/Harbor Islands are great areas too.
