Does anybody know of any good authentic Mexican restaurants in the Lakeland or surrounding area?

Default Great Mexican Joint

Zapatas in DOwntown Saint Pete is by far the best Mexican restaurant in this area. My girlfriend and I have eaten in Mexico and we thing this place is better than the places we ate at while in Mexico.

Zapatas has great food but terrible service. I work one block from Zapatas and it seems like servers never have a clue what they are doing. It takes forever for them to take your order, they never check on you once the order has been brought back, and never refill drinks. The last time I was there I was ready to go and the server was no where to be found to give me the check. In fact, I got up went to the bar where there was no bartender and no host/hostess it crossed my mind that I could do a dine a dash. I didn't, but I was so irritated they were holding me up, after not giving me good service to begin with. That was the last time. I've experienced this probably 5 or 6 times now and finally just gave up. Now I will say, I probably haven't ate their since last August or September, it may have changed since then, but I just got tired of waiting for them to get their act together so my dollar has gone elsewhere.

In Lakeland we used to eat at Chicano's and thought it was pretty good - it's Tex Mex - cheap prices, too. A lot of people recommended Tapatio's for authentic Mexican to us, but we found it bland and tasteless and in a bad area.

There is another one called Peso's on south Florida Ave., supposed owned by the same folks who own Chicano's, but we never ate there. Probably not bad.

Peso's is good. Been some years since I was there but it was very good. I went to the one on west Main Street. Never been to the one on S. FL.... I think there is a Peso's in Plant City too.
