I just moved to Pasco Co. and took my son to the dentist and she told me Pasco doesn't put fluoride in the drinking water here. They gave him fluoride tablets to take at nite but of course he doesn't like them. does anyone give their child these supplements? How big a deal is it to not have fluoride in the water?

Wow - I would really question any dentist that would give a kid fluoride supplements to take! I don't believe in all that crap, they put fluoride on my mouth last time I had my teeth cleaned and I had a TERRIBLE REACTION which lasted a couple weeks! (Burning and peeling of my lips and gums)

Your son will have healthier teeth by eating a proper diet and getting vitamin D from being outdoors!

Flouride can be toxic at moderate to high doses.
In warmer climates such as Florida you intake of water is generally higher than in cooler climates.
There have been instances of sickness from excess flouride consumption.
That being said, some flouride can be beneficial.
You can supplement your diet with flouridated salt and some water bottlers have started adding flouride to their water.

Default Added Flouride is a health risk

As a natural health care professional, I will say Flouride is not a compound you want in your water. In nature there is only about .12 of flouride in water by design. Some counties in Florida have added flouride to a level of .7 which is close to a toxic level of 1.0 in the water. Trust me you do not want this in your water and count it a blessing you live in Pasco. It is a halogen on the chemical chart which means it is very active or labile and can replace other chemicals in the body. The two that concern me greatly are that it replaces calcium (not only in the teeth but also in the bones). This is dangerous as it makes bones brittle. This is also the reason Floridians fought to keep flouride out of the water supply since the 1960's when it was first proposed. Someoone got paid or the intelligence level has dropped that it has now been added to quite a few counties here. The second chemical flouride replaces is iodine in the thyroid gland. This gland controls many functions in the body and if iodine is replaced ,which it will be, since flouride is more active than iodine, then thyroid disease will ensue. Hypothyroidism is increasing among people. This condition is dangerous and leads to fatigue and degenerative diseases if it is not corrected. A person has to live on medication the rest of their life if they develop a thyroid problem. This disease if untreated can lead to heart attack. To take flouride out of your water you have to precipitate it which requires about 64 gallons of wasted water for every gallon of water usable. All restaurant drinks use this water so it is impossible to avoid if one eats out. This is catistrophic for many people because of the health risks involved (cancer and thyroid compromised should not drink this water). So my suggestion to you is to be concerned with the health of your child. The best way to prevent caries is to make sure the child has enough vitamin B and C in the diet. Potatoes and oranges are good. Feed the chilld vegetables and fruits (organic to avoid pesticide exposure) and give no sodas, sweets and sugar. Use a little honey or maple syrup to sweeten if you need to. Brush 2 to 3 times a day and your child will have good sound teeth without giving the quick fix, but very harmful fix, of flouride. If the child is having some decay problems then a topical application of flouride in a mouthpiece when you see your dentist every 3 to 6 months will be benificial. There are dentists in California whose entire practice consist of using nutrition to prevent decay and that will be the future in dentistry one day.

Fluoride (not flouride) is not good for you.

My kids were born in NJ. We moved down here when they were 6 and 9. The pediatrician gave them a prescription vitamin that had fluoride in it. Since moving to the New Tampa area, the pediatrician has said nothing about fluoride. Maybe pasco county is different. High levels of fluoride can cause white spots on your teeth and probably all the other problems mentioned above. I agree with all above, especially lacaster. You get what you need from the foods you eat, if you eat a healthy diet. Fluoride is suppose to be a good cavity preventor. My kids have sealants on their back teeth. It is expensive, but I feel it is worth it, but who knows what these chemicals are doing to our bodies. We won't know the effects until they are older and then we find out that what we thought was safe, is not then it is too late.

It is a highly poisonous toxic industrial waste compound, usually from aluminum production, that is very hard to dispose of environmentally safe. Normally a big expense, and headache, for the industry creating this compound.

Please base your responses on settled science, not conspiracy theory websites and information. Peer reviewed, published and settled science, otherwise you are only talking rumors.

P.S. and that goes for the other responses who diss flouride.

Please provide us with your "Peer reviewed, published and settled science" to review. I didn't see any links or mention of anything that would lead me to believe the post you replied to was basing anything on conspiracy theories.

And really, "diss fluoride", seriously?

Here is a link from the ADA with current knowledge about all aspects of water fluoridation that has been scientifically validated through respected research. You will see that the research pointing to the benefits of fluoridation is far more scientifically valid (in that they are strong, peer reviewed studies) then the research that says it isn't.

I encourage people to question any source that knows for certain that something is right or wrong when it comes to science. This stuff evolves, it's not static, and people on both sides of the argument are quick to over simplify an extremely complex, nuanced issue such as this one.
