We are interested in a lot in south tampa with an existing older home on it. Our plan was to tear down the small home and rebuild out home on the property. We just learned the existing home has sinkhole damage, which is why the price has been lowered extensively.
My question is...would it be dangerous to tear down the home and build a new home if the area was"fixed"? Is that too risky? I am not familiar with sink holes...can the lot be salvaged?

I wouldn't do it. There are plenty of homes at bargain prices w/o the sink hole issue. Keep looking. It's a buyer's market.

Thanks for the link...We actually learned that they just "assume" it is sinkhole damage. The land has never been surveyed. From what we have read, sinkholes rarely occur in South Tampa,is this true? So it is likely that it is just an old house that has settled or was built poorly. We are going to send someone out there to test the land. We don't really care about the house, we were going to tear it down anyway.

I am not a land expert, but if you are planning to demolish, and there is some evidence of sinkhole, your engineers should be able to advise if you can fill/fix the problem before construction.

I don't recall ever hearing about sink holes in S. tpa. Maybe Tampaguy or Tonynorie can tell you if they have heard of any sink holes in S. Tampa.

I have seen them tear down older homes and build these hugh homes on the lot. There is a home off Westshore where it looks like they added 2 stories to the original home.

Being a south Tampa resident since the early 60's I've yet to hear of a sinkhole situation in our community.......does'nt mean that there hasn't been one or some. I associate that problem more with the central Florida regions than I do coastal - I'm far from an expert on the subject however.
