STAY AWAY FROM TRYON CR. That is NOT a good area at all. A very close friend of mine had a son who was involved in a shooting at a gas station right near there. More recently, when I was driving by there I noticed two women outside their home beating each other up. The cops had to come and break it up. My church used to be right around that area, and we were constantly out in that neighborhood ministering to the folks there. There are people in that area living in very bad conditions.

Why are you considering Spring Hill over some other areas? Is there a job in the area you have, or are you just attracted to the inexpensive housing? If you have a choice, you may want to look elsewhere a bit. I'd choose a smaller home or even an apartment in Palm Harbor or some other area further south. Spring Hill is just not the place for kids. It's an OK place for retirees or for people without children. We lived there for many years before moving away. We had children and it was not the best area in which to raise them (in my opinion, anyway). Here's why:

The schools are sub-par compared to where we are now (Northern Pinellas). It's not so much the programming in the schools, but the populace in attendance there. I could tell you horror stories about the middle schools there and the high schools are not that much better. My kids were A students in Spring Hill, but now that we've moved down to better schools, they have really had to struggle to keep up. They education they received in Hernando County was not anything at all like what they are receiving here. You have to make the curriculum fit the populace. If the majority of kids in your class can't handle the curriculum, you have to slow things down for them. This is EXACTLY what is happening in Spring Hill.

There are many families in Spring Hill and who are not able to care for their children properly. In our old neighborhood, we had kids running around unsupervised constantly. They would smash mailboxes, steal, fight, and do drugs. Granted, we were in a lousy neighborhood (almost as bad as where you are considering moving).

There is not a lot to do for teenagers. Sure, they can take the 20 minute drive to Gulf View Square Mall (aka Ghetto View Square Mall), bowl, go to the movies, or wander around the many local Wal-Marts in the area, but that's it. (Oh, I forgot … they can do Pine Island or Buc Bay during the day, too.) But move just an hour south and there is SO MUCH more for them! My kids are never short on things to do here. And the things we do are valuable … museums, performing arts, libraries that stay open late, cool little restaurants, all kinds of cultural and educational programs, etc.

There are VERY FEW sidewalks in Spring Hill, and I was not comfortable letting my kids bike down the street due to a drive by shooting that occurred in our neighborhood just before we moved.

If you MUST live in Spring Hill, please pick a better neighborhood. There are good deals on homes in some of the gated communities and in better places than Tryon Cr.

Tyron Circle is located in an typical residential neighborhood area of Spring Hill. Yes, its pretty quiet as is much of Spring Hill. I saw the latest "I know somebody who..." stories have been posted by a former SH resident. I've lived here for years and have never witnessed such things. Its a convenient area for shopping and daily routines.

Culture shock? 1/2 of the residents here are from NYC.

There is nothing attractive about living there...and for you OP coming from NYC as you like us to "know", prepare yourself for some culture shock. My suggestion is that you visit, or your teenagers will hate you forever for moving them up there.
Where's work? cause commuting from there anywhere will suck too.

The reason why I must live in Spring Hill is to be close to my aging mother. My kids were born in SH so they are used to the quiet living. I really don't like living in a gated or deed restricted community.

Yes. I've lived in SH for a few years back in the 90's. I just wanted to find a place where it's secluded and quiet. As someone mentioned earlier, the crime report posted wasn't that bad due to the report listing activity since mid 90's.

There are some good quiet neighborhoods here. You don't have to be in a gated community to have a nice house in a nice quiet neighborhood.

Since you must live there and don't care for gated or deed restricted communities, you may want to try looking closer to the Suncoast Parkway. The neighborhoods over there aren't as bad as where you were looking.

SH has grown a bit since the 90's. If you really want secluded and quiet, I'd have to go with Mike's suggestion for North of 50, the Highlands.

Is the Highlands going towards Citrus County? I believe there is a new elementary and high school near the Highlands? That might be a perfect spot.
