I've been watching the shows airing on Coast Guard rescues in Florida and it is AMAZING the wide variety of work done, not just rescues. I've always had a respect for those who serve the public but I've gained a deeper respect for the Coast Guard!

p.s. I just watched one over the weekend where the Bucs rookies and two of the cheerleaders got to visit.

Thanks for your service to the country. That sounds like a great day, is this an annual event? Love to bring my boy to it when we move.

Bavarian, being an Air Force veteran, we always had an annual Open House for the community. I am not sure though, after 9/11, if things have changed. If not, MacDill AFB probably has one as well.

I am working with the Air Force/Army now overseas but being a navy veteran I would love the chance to get my son around actively employed CG or Navy ships for, like you say, an open house.

I remember when I was in they had what was called a "tiger cruise" that at the end of a ships deployment you could bring a family member out, had to be a man, and they could spend the last couple of days with you living on the ship. I cant remember the exact specifics, I am sure not everyone could since a carrier would go from 5k people to 10k, be a bit tight but I think their must've been a number of racks available for a lottery or something, it was a long time ago and don't remember.

That would have been a great experience! I was able to tour a Navy ship in Galveston many years ago. Very neat! I have no idea why I ended up in the USAF....I hate to fly but love the water lol.
