I'm going to be relocating down to Tampa soon and wanted to get in touch with a few companies primarily to get some information, but also maybe get some quotes in the process. Just wondering who's good & who's not. I'm not necessarily after the cheapest price as I'd like to have some level of service if something should happen.

I'm not sure if you have the same thing down there, probably a dumb statement, but here we go through an insurance broker. They rate shop for us and the few times we needed them they were awesome to deal with. They know exactly what our policy is and whats covered so we have zero issues and don't have to deal with anything - then they go to bat against the actual insurance company for us.

Thanks for any input!

I'm coming from Canada, and no one I know in the Canadian gov't either.

BTW who's the 'General'? Is it as simple as 'General Insurance'?

Ah ok. The insurance they are referring to is just called the General, its crappy insurance if you ask me. They specialize in high risk insurance, so they tend to be a bit more expensive. I would never consider them, personally.

Major insurance companies are State Farm, Geico, Allstate

I would call an independent agent... they can put you with any one of a dozen or more A-grade companies based on the lowest rate. A good agent won't put you with a company that doesn't offer good service or won't take care of you if you have an accident.

My agent (also my sister) moves me to a different company almost every year. For some reason there is heavy fluctuation in rates. Some companies also give discounts if you have other insurance (e.g. homeowners) with them, but in my experience this has not produced as much savings as having my agent shop around.

Esurance has been the cheapest for us...we have a 2010 Camaro and 2007 Outlander, full coverage. We were with Progressive when we moved here and it doubled..we're from IN. The Esurance price went back to what we were paying in IN, which was like 120/mo.
