Not everyone says "Don't go to Florida", infact all I personally hear from current residents is quite the opposite, come to Florida, you will love it here!
I travel to Fla allot on business and vacation and have not run into a single person who told me when I asked them a question, and I ask allot of them "do not come here because....."

Since you have never been to Florida you need to travel and see as many areas as you can to get a feel for it.

You're hearing the voice of only a few on this board.......many of whom don't even live here anymore. Read and pay attention to the names on the posts. You'll figure it out.

I've lived in Orlando for 23 years and Tampa for 3 years. I like it here much better than the other places I've lived. The piedmont area of South Carolina, Middle AND South Georgia, California, and Tennessee.

Florida is going through some tough times right now overall - mostly due to the hurricanes of '04, growth issues and speculators who drove up the housing market in '03-'05. Now we are dealing with the aftermath of all that.

The biggest problem is that many people have seen their standard of living decrease due to much higher home, tax and insurance costs. Alot of people - especially young people just starting out, who don't have equity built in their homes - can't afford the average cost for a home in Florida anymore - especially when adding in a large tax and insurance bill.

There are still a few affordable areas of Florida and Tarpon Springs is a lovely community - one of my favorite places to visit. I can't speak to its affordability.

Read the above comments with interest. Coming soon to Tampa area, and looking at Tarpon Springs to buy a place. Wonder if anybody could comment specifically on the community of Pointe Alexis? Have heard talk of the "West Side" of Tarpon? How vulnerable are these communities in a hurricane, and any comments on cost of homeowners and flood insurance for these places? Thanks.
