Good Morning Everyone,
Thank you each for your response. I am deliberating still, the landlord said she would take some pictures and send today, will see them and see how I feel. At this point, will not probably go for it, the lease will not work for me, if it has to be a year, the busy street, not so good either.
But I sure did like the screened in porch, fireplace, laundry hookups, pet friendly (cat) garage, & hardwood floors, plus it had new windows.....2 bdrm it really hit everything for me....but not seeing it first and then to sign for a year would be rather stupid, but it is hard to find all the specifics together....o well.....thanks everyone, learning as I go....sincerely, sandra
I took pics around noon and will upload them shortly... it's a very good part of Eastwood. Busy street, yes- but Syracuse is a city. You'd be hard-pressed to find an area that isn't.
Personally, I would rent this house in a second for that price. Like I said, I'll upload pics momentarily. Think about it.
I wandered around Eastwood yesterday, partially in curiousity... until I got to Butternut. Anyone looking to move to the North Side- STAY AWAY from Butternut. As far away as you can afford.
I apologize in advance for the sloppy pics. We have three toddlers and they did NOT behave for the greater part of the day. LOL - I took pictures as well as safety would allow. (AND, I apologize for my horribly dirty side windows that I didn't notice as much until I uploaded the pics. Now, for Eastwood:
Just FYI, they tore down existing buildings for that, it's not a rehab project. That's the long fought over Walgreens they're putting in. Originally was supposed to open by January, but they had a mishap in demolition late last year which set them back a ways - since, when the contractor demolished a building they weren't supposed to in addition, they were fired. Should open within a few months from the looks of it.
From Park St., looking down "Exchange Blvd." - pic taken to show probably the eeriest street I've seen in Syracuse. It looks like it was once a wide avenue for a market-type setting... now a derelict alleyway for filth, garbage, and the homeless. I don't understand why, if the goal is to improve Syracuse, this alley and the streets surrounding are *allowed* to look this bad. I understand that it's abandoned but this is RIGHT when you come off the highways - it's a horrible impression: http://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2675/89/55/543140696/n543140696_6093411_8335717.jpg (broken link)
I can't speak too much to the immediate neighborhood, but it's pretty stable. There's Shop City just a few blocks away with a supermarket, drugstore, a handful of banks. Teall between James and Grant Blvd (the plaza's on Grant) is pretty good. Smallish lots but that's partly why there's rentals over there.
The only real detractor I have for over there is that Teall's a busy street, so getting out of your driveway may be difficult during peak times. That end's sort of transitional - it's blocks from the (very nice) Sedgwick neighborhood, and really on the outskirts of Eastwood itself. South of James it's a bit rougher, but still alright.
At that address, you're two blocks from Lincoln Middle School and a few more from an elementary and a high school, so you'll probably get a fair amount of pedestrian student traffic nearby.
You think the part of Eastwood that is south of James is rougher than the part of Eastwood north of James? I think it varies too, but those neighborhoods south of James east of Midler and the Shotwell Park area, with a couple of other streets I can't think of, are really nice and stable. There are some north of James that are east of Midler and between Midler and the housing are fine too.

Heading north on Thompson, at James Street
Looking west
Heading west on James Street
Turning right onto North Midler
looking east of where North Midler becomes New Court Street Road
Start of New Court Street Road
Heading south to Midler at James.
Again, heading west on James
Older, existing building, being rehabbed:
continuing on James- start of Grant Blvd. to the right
Continuing to the nicer part of James Street
Heading north on Teall Ave., about to hit James...
Looking north on Teall where it meets James
I will say, that if a person does look at the North side, go for the the part of butternut that is north of Grant Boulevard. That area is actually really nice still. That's just north of the circle were Byrne Dairy and Jaquin Cleaners are located. It does get rougher the further you go towards Downtown though.
At the end of Teall is Court Street, where I turned left:
Syracuse China's sign
If you ever have REAL issues, Sister Augustine is wonderful, here at:
Turned right at First North Street:
At Lemoyne Ave
Gorgeous, neglected home

Turned right from Park St. into the CNY Regional Market
Pic taken to show the "logo" (someone else, please clarify as I'm certain that's not the appropriate term) of the Iroquois Indian Nation, based just south of the city of Syracuse.
All the wares you could find at street vendors in NYC. lol
Yummy ravioli samples!
Heading back through the North Side and Eastwood:
On Lodi, about to turn left onto James Street:
Entry to Sedgewick Farms
And here start the dirty window pics - again, sorry!!! Such gorgeous homes and the shot is so gross. <sigh>
Turning right, heading south on Teall:
That logo is of the Haudenosaunee, as they call themselves.
WOW, photo overload great pics tho. Those old mansions are really spectacular, I'd love to live in one of those someday if they haven't all been converted to offices by then!
