Well...where will you be working and where would you want to live? Like any area St. Louis has many safe places and several places you would will want to steer clear of.

Have you looked around the St. Louis forum: Most of St. Louis' crime is concentrated on the north side, and spotty areas of the south side.

How dangerous an area is can vary a lot by neighborhood. So some more info from you would be good.

Just stay out of North City and East St. Louis (across the river in Illinois). If you really want to be free of crime, get an apartment in St. Louis County close to the St. Louis city limits. St. Louis County has one of the lowest crime rates of any county in the country, and very few if any run-down areas.

"yet a very dangerous city."

These are words from someone who puts waaaaay too much stock in what the media and idiot suburbanites say. I am not dissing you for that, however, because I was just as apprehensive about the city when I moved to the area a while ago.

Take it from someone who lives in a safe, relatively quiet neighborhood (Franz Park, which is part of "Dogtown"). The areas you are worried about you will never have a need to go to.

When you live in a nice neighborhood like in Dogtown, you are surrounded by other nice neighborhoods. I grocery shop on the Hill (in the city), Maplewood (inner-ring suburb separated only by city streets from STL city), and Hampton Village (in the city). For staples (kitchen stuff, cleaning supplies, all the other stuff that doesn't fall under 'grocery' I shop in Maplewood and again, Hampton Village (Hampton Village has a Schnucks grocery, Walgreens, and a Target). For things I need in a hurry, I can walk 500 feet to K-Mart in Dogtown (my hood).

For fresh veggies, I go to the Soulard Farmer's Market in the Soulard neighborhood. Get my hair cut 2 blocks down from the farmer's market. Soulard is a relatively safe neighborhood as well.

I will go anywhere in the city or county to eat and have no reservations about it. I will take my wife and 2 year old with me.

In other words, you will not need to go to East St. Louis (in Illinois) or north city (where the majority of violent crimes happen in the city) for anything at all, unless you choose to. I for one will take driving tours of north city, and I doubt there's a true St Louisan on this forum who wouldn't go to Crown Candy Kitchen on the north side for a delicious malt or homemade candy.

Pick a nice, safe, city neighborhood and you will have no need to visit the sketchy parts of town.

In STL ...

If it looks really dangerous, it is dangerous.

If it looks moderately dangerous, it is not dangerous.

If it looks slightly sketchy, it is not dangerous.

If it looks safe, it is not dangerous.

Or you could just say stay out of North City and parts of North County if safety is your main concern.

What part of the city?

Granted, about every part of the city will have occasional crime. That's called being a city.

Although, at this point I'm not sure if you really want to move to St. Louis, or if you're just trying to call St. Louis dangerous and discourage other people from moving there.
